statment 2025
My practice is the pursuit of contemplative calm and curiosity and regulation. Immersion in the flow state. Unrest and distraction and reaction comes our way relentlessly so it is now absolutely necessary to channel this flow state wherever possible. Not just the arts but in everything, as many people in every interest and discipline, hobby, and situation. By facilitating a creative response from my environment and life experience I can explore this flow state as much as possible, and then hopefully transmit to others its benefits through a visual experience and through living an example of how such a practice can carry you on your journey in a peaceful way. With the recent series developing, I want the viewer to be able to notice many dualities. I want busyness to be contained with calm, simplicity noticed in the complexity, permanence and transience to be felt, calmness and excitement, quiet and noise. You cant have one without the other but you can choose which to focus on when you want. Noticing and permitting the experience of dualities has become very important to me in my life and so I explore it in my practice. Since my early twenties I have suffered with ulcerative colitis and spondyloarthritis and now additionally diagnosis of crohn's disease. It's now a decade of mind blowing symptoms, pain, disassociation, fear and unknown but simultaneously and most importantly Ive experienced a decade of excitement, fun, creativity, laughter and adventure and happiness and connection. You can have a good time and a bad time at the same time has been a freeing realisation, our brains are powerful, you can't decide what happens to you but you can decide how you react. My practice has facilitated joy and energy and outward expression when my body has restricted me. The paintings are visually happy and energetic and decorative and beautiful as for me they represent an oasis within a very difficult time. Hopefully I can share a moment of flow with the viewer similar to how I feel when I paint. Please get in touch if you want to talk about my work, ask about purchasing, or even talk about your own difficulties with life altering things like illness. I have always found it useful to connect with others over things like this. |
